I live in Paisley, have done since 2015 when I moved from England to go to UWS, stayed here because I couldn't be arsed moving back and didn't have anyone to do so and made friends.

It's clearly got its faults. Lots of jakeys/neds and feral youths/young teams. Wait for a bus just outside the Piazza shopping centre for 10 mins and you'll see what I mean.

Most folk though are really warm, welcoming and friendly. Could probably say the same about most of Scotland though but definitely think Paisley has something here.

It's got great nightlife with loads of excellent pubs/bars (The Keg, Whisky Joes, The Old Swan, The Cave, The Bull Inn, De Beers, Wee Howff, Bankhouse to name a few), venues (Bungalow/RocknRollas) and a few nightclubs (Vienna's is definitely an experience to say the least but is usually a fun night out).

Architecturally it's beautiful with some amazing buildings including the Abbey, Town Hall, Coats Memorial, Observatory to name some. They're currently working on heavily refurbishing the museum (currently a massive building site, they're spending millions) which I've not yet been to but heard good things about.

The annual events the council put on are usually heaving and well organised, including the Food/Beer Festival (previously the CAMRA beer festival) that happened this weekend, Halloween & Guy Fawkes night.

The thing that really lacks for Paisley is shopping, eating out casually (there's some good restaurants & pubs but no fast food chains etc. other than Greggs - McDonald's recently closed, there still is one in Paisley but it's a 20/30 min walk from the town centre) & the high street but that's down to online shopping and the nearby Braehead/Silverburn shopping centres within 20 mins driving distance. Hard to compete especially with free parking there and being indoors shielded from Scottish weather. The two shopping centres are ghost towns, especially The Paisley Centre which if you're into liminal spaces is paradise. If you don't drive you're stuck going into Glasgow by train or taking the bus which can be a pain. The cost of living crisis means many places have closed recently too just like Glasgow - including the very popular Blend coffee shop which was always busy and I'm surprised has closed and Malatso coffee shop.

As others have said the benefit (which also contributes to Paisley's downfall) is the transport links. There's Paisley Gilmour St station which have regular trains up to about midnight to Glasgow and Ayrshire (Ayr/Wemyss Bay/Gourock/Ardrossan Harbour/Largs), the Paisley Canal line and also Paisley St James station near Ferguslie. Also regular busses (First 9/McGills 38) to Glasgow and the airport for further abroad. The main reason I stayed about here as could go to work in Glasgow very easily.
