9am is peak-time, so rather than your whole ticket being charged at peak hour pricing, you can choose to split your journey.
So you’ll buy a ticket say from Glasgow to Carlisle. It’s an hour and a bit, so by the time you arrive to Carlisle it’s 10:30 and off peak.
The second leg of the journey is now charged at off peak pricing.
One ticket - All peak - £180
Split - Glasgow - Carlisle (Peak) - £25 + Carlisle - London (off peak) £80 = £105
