Buy well in advance, and the tickets can be insanely cheap.

Learn your local trains peak times as its cheaper if you avoid them.

Check prices for singles vs open returns as if you do a lot of twoing and froing between stations thats cheaper.

Trainline and Scotrail app (aswell as other train company aps) also help save money.

You can get one of these apps and experiment with different ticket options to get a sense of how they work.

Railcards can be good and they pay for themselves really quick.

Then there is the split ticket thing, which you can google. Something to do with extra fees if you go place to place but the tickets are cheaper if you buy two journeys. Trainline does this automatically.

Some people also skip fairs if you're going between two stops with no ticket gates but dont do this without being sure its safe as some train companies can fine you for it. Others will just sell you a ticket before you go through the gate so you can get away with just seeing if a ticket guy shows up on the train.

I am of course not endorsing that last one but would be remis not to mention it.
