Honestly, for a first time, you ideally want somewhere shallow, slow moving and not *endless.* A beach is a bad idea. You might find success taking them to the Botanic Gardens in the West End - there's a curve in the path at the far end where a small stoney beach leads to a shallow, slow moving part of the river that would likely be a good introduction and also means that, should anything happen, you will be absolutely capable of barrelling into the water like an overprotective parent to go to their rescue. There's also very often a kingfisher that flies up and down that portion of the Kelvin that's worth keeping an eye out for.
