The irony of this is that I'm actually deaf. I've been learning BSL but I don't tend to want to make pals with older ladies who knock on my door on a Saturday morning.
And the answer to your question (joke) is that there's loads of really cool assistive technology now. I have flashing and vibrating alarms installed linked to my smoke alarms.
