If I recall correctly it was McGills that said that the SG grants didn’t come close to covering the up front costs of fleet modernisation.

Unfortunately you are also incorrect regarding the operational costs, euro 6 vehicles generally speaking have had higher operational costs than euro 4 & 5 vehicles, 2-8% increases in real world efficiency have broadly been offset by increased maintenance costs due to EGR systems increasing engine wear (to reduce NOx emissions), DPF systems causing general headaches in fleets, and DEF systems requiring further maintenance (to further reduce NOx).

Euro 6 and its plant equivalent stage 5 are really pushing the envelope of what ICE is capable of in terms of emissions, increased operating costs have been broadly seen across several industries, I was unfortunately a power systems engineer at a generation company when stage 5 hit us in ‘19.
