They will investigate. It involves opening your letter box and having a good look/sniff. I was caught in a similar situation years ago as the owner; this is how I know it's what they do.
Maybe if one of them has a hobbyist lock-picker then could gain entry without damage; although I am not sure of the legalities of that.
