Not criticising this action in particularly, I frankly don't really know what I am talking about when it comes to unions (used to lean libertarian and realised I was very wrong previously).

However I have noticed a lot, almost all, labour disputes seem to be around independent businesses that are both struggling and do seem to at least be trying to take some effort to do what they can.

13th Note, Locavore, Single-end, CCA would be the first few to come to mind.

I work for a non profit who competes against huge corporations and notice that people are far more willing to critisize the product I work on for engaging in "corporate activity" which we need to do to survive vs the huge conglomerates who directly benefit from that critique. The end result of that is it makes independent businesses unsustainable and they are replaced by huge companies.

I might be completely off base, just a trend and a parallel that keeps springing up.
