The best thing to do is make sure that all food is sealed away. Check any packets or cereal boxes for tiny bites even if they are in cupboards with no obvious access. Mice come indoors for food and warmth during the winter. If you don't have any food eaten then there is a chance the mouse was just going to another flat. You can't control how your neighbours store food. Living in a city no matter what you do, at some point you'll have a mouse running through.

Traps and poision are what I've used in the past. Poison yeah you run the risk of a smell but it also means that the mouse will take it back to the other mice and fuck them up as well. As long as they haven't nested in your house might be worth the risk.

Try sealing up as many entry points as you can but in old block of flats and houses this is near impossible. Bets advice is just keep the place clean and seal away food. Don't leave fruit or anything out.
