i mean, this is something a lot of motorists in the UK don't seem to understand imho. it can be way more stressful and mentally taxing cycling on the road than driving or riding in a protected cycle lane. as you said, you have to be able to predict everything. i've honestly came up with my own rules for how to ride on the road in glasgow.

waiting in the bike box? stand to the left of whatever lane you need to be in because sometimes motorists try to run red lights. (seriously, once a month a nearly get hit this way)
see a BMW, audi or golf GTI behind you? best just pull in and let them pass, it's more than likely they'll tailgate you or pass dangerously close.
don't ever expect motorists to ever stop before the line on a junction that has a cycle lane on it.
range rovers are usually driven by people who think texting and driving is fine.
never cycle in a bus lane with parked cars.
if you're pulling up to a set of lights and see a motorcyclist, wait next to them and say hi. sometimes you're lucky and they'll ride beside you for safety (the unwritten connection between cyclists and motorcyclist is "one distracted driver and you could be a statistic" i'm pretty sure)
just because something is "the law" don't expect drivers to follow it.
