Clip and Climb at Kelvinhall is great fun and an 8 year old is a great age for it.

There is a place in Fenwick, which is up the M77 about 25 mins, one junction before Kilmarnock. It’s called Crawfurdland Tree Top adventures, and they have a Go Ape type assault course. They have 3 courses - the smallest is suitable for small kids and adults (my son did it when he was 6). It has rope bridges, tyres and 3 zip lines across the course. You can usually get round the course twice in the half hour slot, but we managed 3 times once, when there wasn’t anyone slower in front of us. It’s not the cheapest day out, but really good fun.

They have a cafe and restaurant there too, which has very good home baking.

If you are out that way, The Forum Cafe in Kilmarnock does the best ice cream in Scotland, if not the world (and I’ll fight anyone that disagrees). Only another 10 min drive from Crawfurdland.

The Dean Park in Kilmarnock (5 mins from the Forum Cafe) has a nice walk along the river with easy access down to the river for chucking in stones. There is also deer, pigs and horses further in to the park, and a pretty good wooden adventure playground (but it is closed quite often for repairs). The park is maybe not worth the trip on its own, but one a nice day, it’s a really lovely place. If you were out that way for the rope climbing, it’s a good way to spend the rest of the day, and justify a longer trip out of the city.
