Junkies make the easiest targets to hate on, the easiest to dehumanise. It's really hard for some people to be compassionate towards a junkie, especially if you've never been that deep in the shit yourself.
I suggest imagining you are in that scenario again and you notice the person shooting up is in fact a loved one you haven't seen in years. How would you react if that was your brother? Your son? Now realise he is someone's brother or son. A human being who is suffering immense pain and sadness, whose life is awful and filled with struggle. I'm not saying it isn't natural to be frustrated and annoyed, to judge harshly, but try standing back from that immediate emotional reaction and engage your empathy once in a while. Best of luck. |
