A lot of the people moved out of the city were as a result of slum clearances. Parts of Glasgow had the highest density in Western Europe.

The only way to keep similar density was with high-rise developments (not ideal) and if you bring the density down some people need to decant somewhere.

The M8 took some of the land, but the houses were coming down anyway. There are photos after the road was completed with rows of tenements beside it in places that are long gone now.
