Tipping here is appreciated but not expected. You don’t have to add 20% to everything.

Restaurants anything from a couple of quid to 10% is fine. Nobody will chase you out the door like they do stateside if you don’t leave a 15%+ tip. Tipping here is a genuine tip for service you feel was good, rather than an expectation in order to make up staff pay. Cabbies and other service staff will appreciate a round up or a couple of quid thrown their way.

Somebody else mentioned that taxis are fussy with card payments so if you hail one off the street make sure it has yellow stickers on the side saying “Glasgow Taxis” with credit card logos on it, or ask before you commence your journey. Alternatively Glasgow Taxis app lets you book and pay just like Uber - and of course Uber is here also.

Amex is widely accepted here but you may run into issues at smaller retailers.

When it comes to credit/debit card payments everything is contactless or chip and pin. If you’re paying with card at a restaurant they will bring the machine to your table rather than take your card and swipe it.

Don’t worry about the differences in language. Nobody in the real world cares if you call a pavement a sidewalk. We grew up watching American TV. We know what you mean.
