Comment | Trained gardener here. When we moved into our current flat, the garden was distinctly unloved but not a total jungle. Sane situation ad you, shared garden for 8 flats, 6 owner occupied, 2 rented out, nobody objected to us hacking away. Have you got decent tools?
There are essentially 2 schools of approaching such a gargantuan task: do one job at a time, or do one area at a time.
I would start with an area near the door so you have a cheerful result fairly soon to keep you motivated.
You might not get a huge amount of new plants in as it's nearly solstice, but whe you start planting, bear in mind that the soil is rubbish: ericaceous, depleted, compacted. Easier to start with pots (azaleas / rhododendron grow well though, and possibly heather, ferns if it's shady (and you have time to water).
