My advice is, if during the process they start messing you around, take your keys off them and tell them to fuck off. And I mean, actually tell them to "fuck off" because it's the only language they understand. Any attempts to resolve things like an honest adult, will only see them continue to rip the pish out of you.
I feel your pain, OP. This has been one of the most stressful things I've ever experienced in my life, and I usually don't let things get to me. If it's any consolation, you're not alone out there.
