Not really hidden but if you're looking for a train ride:

**Balloch** is an alright day out - book an hour or two cruise with Sweeney's to really make it. Just expect a few underage bams with Mad Dugs on the train (I've never seen so many people go in the toilet and not use it - did have a snide giggle when the ticket conductor caught one of them and kicked him off).

**Helensburgh** is quite nice and on a similar train route. Nice for a walk on the promenade, on the pier and an ice cream.

**Largs, Troon, Prestwick & Ayr** are about an hour on the train from Glasgow Central and good for a trip out. **Largs** especially, one of my favourite places that I try and visit at least once a year - fantastic fish & chips at The Fish Works. Take a ferry out to Millport for a pint at one of the pubs there - a relatively cheap day out. If you're into cycling you can rent a bike at Millport and cycle around the island.

Also about half an hour to an hour's away you could go to **Stirling** which has some cool attractions like The Old Town Jail which was an old prison and goes into detail about prison reform, which is quite cheap for what you get and has a fun acted performance part to the tour, and a 360 degree open view of Stirling and the surrounding area at the top of the prison tower.

If you fancy a hike you could go to **Kilpatrick** and go up the hill there.

Also I guess the obvious which is **Edinburgh** which is always a nice day out and only an hour away especially with the trams recently just opening up to Leith. I might get shot down on /r/glasgow for saying that though even though most will admit it is a scenic place.
