There is a machine, just at the top of the stairs beyond the ticket booth. Definitely a good idea to avoid getting stuck at the queue at the other end, although you end up kicking yourself if they've flung all the barriers open in Argyle Street due to escalators broken/no staff/post rush hour and you've got a ticket!
