My partner and I (at the time we were 27) bought before the pandemic, with some help from her mum, my dad and a fuck tonne of scrimping and saving. We also got incredibly lucky in the haystack that is the market - bought at 147k with a 10% deposit for a 2 bed in Battlefield. We were renting at £500pm for a 1 bed flat in shawlands before and our mortgage is Approx £550 since.

In the 4 years past we’ve seen the price of rent increases and as it has has absolutely boggled our brains. We have friends renting at close to £1000pm in flats whose condition is appalling and we feel helpless for them.

The only advice we can give to anyone looking is that the southside, once you get out past sort of the Cathcart radius, has been relatively untouched by the creeping gentrification and still seems relatively affordable. Aim for anything on the Newton or Neilston train lines as these are super regular and at most a 20 min hop into the city. You still get cool wee neighbourhoods, parks within walking distance and tenement housing stock.
