I have a theory that the gig culture has changed. It used to be that basically everyone would be a fan of the band, but nowadays, I think a lot of people just want a night out and the band is irrelevant. Moreso when the band is super famous.
I went to see Springsteen a few years ago, and the majority of the crowd were just there to hear Born in the USA or Dancing in the Dark and anything apart from that they just didn't care about. They literally weren't watching.
The other thing to consider is how many people are actually paying for the tickets. The Stones played Hampden about 15 years ago. I know lots of people who went and nobody actually paid for a ticket. They were getting them as work bonuses, freebies in the Daily Record and even mates of people involved in the production.
