I have not converted a van before but I have built a teardrop camping trailer from scratch before. Think mini aluminium egg shaped caravan.

Converting a van is not at all difficult to be honest if you have any tool skills. The key is doing your homework and selecting the right donor van for you. Expect to add somewhere just shy of £1k for the fit out on top of the cost of the van if you watch your costs very carefully. Picking the right donor is the single most important step.

I updated the imgur album (in the original post) to show some of the still-in-progress pictures if you are thinking of doing it yourself. Like any of these things you can go crazy and get really complicated, but if you just want a mobile bed, two ring stove and a sink then it is very do-able. You don't even need electrics if you can get by with a battery powered lamp.

If you can build an ikea futon bed, you can fit B&Q kitchen cabinets and put up cladding. Cut some holes for your windows, add window rubber and screw on the stays. A few other similar jobs on top of that and you are all done. You don't need much in the way of hand tools. A screwdriver, hammer, saw are the basics.
