It's a copper roof.

Look around the city, you'll notice it on loads of structures. Mitchell Library dome, a few churches, etc.

They use copper because a copper roof is supposed to be able to last around 1000 years without needing replacement, needs very litthe ongoing maintenance, can be formed into complex shapes and, believe it or not, the green patina is a highly desirable aesthetic.

Imagine a roof that size in slate. It would cost a fortune to maintain.

The original cathedral had a thatch roof.
