We have loads of plants in our close, but it's South facing so gets plenty of light.

Aspidistra are particularly good in low light, also most types of ivy, and rubber plants.

The extra fire risk of some pot plants is minimal, but the benefits can be huge, because it shows that there are people in the close who care about the building as a whole, and not just the part of it that they own. That's vital. Go for it.
