Comment | The fact it's privately owned is a hurdle, but not an insurmountable one. If there was public pressure there'd also be political pressure, GCC could compulsorily purchase the Egyptian Halls, or declare works urgent and carry them out, passing the cost on to the owner.
The banknote black hole that is GSA is only being continually rebuilt because of the public profile of the building - it's a crowd pleaser. I've no idea which of the two buildings is more architecturally significant but if Thomson had the same public profile as Mackintosh that scaffolding would have been long gone, regardless of who owns the building. |
