There's a biking discipline called "Enduro" which is a bit like a car rally. Riders follow a big course and get timed over predominantly downhill sections and the lowest cumulative time for those sections is the winner.

The pinnacle of that discipline was the Enduro World Series (EWS) and it was setup by a guy from Edinburgh (Chris Ball) along with an Italian guy and some others.

That series has been going since 2013 with a bunch of races each year around the world.

Last year, the organisers of the EWS got control of other cycling disciplines like Cross Country and Downhill, and they then did a deal with Warner Discovery to take over the broadcast and organisation of those races. This new organisation is based in Scotland and as a result they're in with the worldwide governing body of cycling, the UCI.

In turn they've then been able to bring the world championships here for every discipline. As far as I can tell, this is the first time this has happened..for example last year the road race was in Australia, the DH was in France..it's a massive thing to get every single discipline here
