I don't know your circumstances and surely don't want to sound like one of those "fuck cars, get a bike" people, but I'd consider that question first: will you really need to drive a car into the city centre?

I lived in Glasgow for well over 15 years and I don't know if I was in the strict city centee with a car for more than 50 times. And mind you, I was living in Glasgow when driving in city centre was much easier, before most of today's bus gates and road closures were introduced. Enough to say that I think second last time I was with my car in the city centre, I parked at the George Square. And I moved out from Scotland only last autumn.

Surely, I had a car and I used it for commuting and other purposes, but it just made no sense to go into the city with the car, as the parking is a bitch and if you're going there in the day you can easily take a train (or drive to one of the suburban train stations, park there and take a train, depending where you leave) and it will be cheaper than paying for parking in the city - and if you are going at night to party, you should not be driving anyway...

If that would be your circumstances too then it could be worth just buying some cheap old non-LEZ compliant banger and just don't drive it into the city (the zone is pretty small anyway, you can easily walk across it in less than 20 minutes) - and you can benefit from the price drop of the non-LEZ compliant cars.
