This is true for traffic lights but far from all of them, big junctions are often timed but ones along a road almost always activate by the button.
I have seen Byres Road skip pedestrians a few times so I think but am not certain it will skip pedestrians if nobody has pressed at all which is mad since most people assume they dont need to.
