Absolutely would recommend. I did the opposite thing - born and bred in Glasgow, did my degree there but went to Virginia to study for a couple of months near the end. The difference in culture was intense and eye opening and the racism was part of the fabric of the place (I'm white so can't speak to what it would be like to be black in Glasgow, but I can tell you I was very aware of a big social divide in Virginia that was entirely new to me, outside of the Rangers/Celtic thing). I'd never been anywhere else either and it was great to be somewhere so different. Now live in Canada and I'm convinced if I hadn't got out my comfort zone at that time in my life I'd never have had the guts to live abroad later on.
