Harrogate is a pain in arse to drive to from Glasgow - anything round that Leeds area is not well served by any transport from the north. No direct trains. Quickest route by car is down to Penrith then across the A66 to Scotch Corner. There are still long stretches of this road that are single lane in both directions, so if you get stuck behind a lorry, tractor or caravan, it can take a while.

I drive to Harrogate and Manchester regularly - Manchester is 40 miles longer but I can do it almost an hour quicker on a good day.

If you haven’t done the drive yet, try it and decide if it’s for you. 200 miles on paper looks fine but it’ll be the best part of 4 hours. The A66 over the winter months can close due to weather and/or accidents. Both often close the road for hours at a time.
