Heya!

Depending on where in NZ you are from, you'll have to define "mid-income". I'm assuming the west end would suit you (Hillhead, Partick etc.). Though most European cities are very compact, compared to the new world, so prices can vary a lot in a smaller area.

I have no idea how the work siutation is for that type of visa, I'm a EU citizen and may have to find out soon, so anyone pitching that information over will have my gratitude.

As for transport, we have a cute little subway systemthat goes from the west end to the city centre and is the easiest way to cross the river imo. There are plenty of buses, taxis and Uber, but the general consensus of busses in Glasgow is that we'd like to run the companies into a ditch and light the on fire.

An SAD lamp and vitamin D supplements is what gets most people through. A GP will often prescribe the supplements, but they are readily available in most stores.

As for walking home alone at night, I've never had problems, but it only takes once incident to ruin everything. If you stay in a group, you'll likely be fine, but this also depends on the area itself... Though I would bring a big group, if I wanted to walk under the Highland Man's Umbrella (The bridge under Central Station) at night.

As someone who is an immigrant, I have to say that the people are absolutely fantastic and welcoming, just don't be a cunt.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. If anyone disagrees with me, feel free to correct me... Aside from the friendliness of the city, I'm not changing my mind on that one.
