1. get a good set of lights for your bike (or get a bike fitted with dyno lights)
2. get a good, waterproof, reflective jacket
3. have a bike with mudguards
4. good set of tires
if it's glasgow uni, personally i would go down sauchiehall street and through kelvingrove park. just be nice to the pedestrians since it is a mixed use path.
