| Comment | This is mental to me. I’ve got both Chinese and Pakistani pals, all Glasgow born & bred and we’ve had chats about this sort of thing before. From their perspective, the fact that you’re not using it maliciously is completely irrelevant. Chinky/Paki have very commonly been used as derogatory terms over the years, and it still rouses feelings of anger for them, whether it’s aimed at them maliciously or not. They’re nasty words full of historical racism and hatred, so let’s just assign them to history now, eh? There is no reason we should be referring to a Chinese restaurant as “a Chinky” or a corner shop as “a paki shop” in 2023. The fact this even needs explained is baffling. |
