There is an express train between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen St that leaves either station at :00, :15, :30, and :45 past the hour. (Might be only :15 and :45 in the winter, not sure but it changes now and then.) That takes about 50 minutes. It's fine to do but you wouldn't be able to go out to bars in Glasgow if you are staying in Edinburgh or vice versa, you would have to come back around 10 or 11 pm I think.

It's something like £14.50 for an off peak day return and £20 for an off peak open return so you would save a bit of money coming over and staying in a hotel, then going back, than you would if you took multiple journeys.

Your way wouldn't require you to take all your luggage with you, though. There are some upsides.

Also might I interest you in going somewhere that's not the city? if you like the seaside, North Berwick or Dunbar are a short train ride from Edinburgh. If you like mountains we've plenty of those, too (Pentlands, near Edinburgh, are the closest hills). Loch Lomond is very close to Glasgow. Etc.
