The bus is cheapest and slowest. Get the bus to St Andrews' square and then walk if you are at the main Edinburgh campus or get a Lothian bus (contactless now) if you aren't.

Driving you have the cost of petrol and you'll need to find and pay for parking at the Edinburgh end. This is probably OK if you are at Napier in Sighthill or Craiglockhart or at the "Bioquarter" out in the sticks because you can get M and A roads the whole way there, but if you are at one of the campuses in town then forget it. The time bonus will be eaten up by finding inner-city parking and you'll pay at least the same in parking and petrol as it will cost for the bus or train.

The train sits in between both. They're pretty reliable if you are able to get them outside commuter times and they are probably the quickest way to get to stuff in the city centre.

If it was me, I would be looking at the train as a first resort.
