Sounds like the classic ‘fault code = faulty part’ repair method. This boils my blood as a former diagnostic tech.

If you are paying for a repair, in this case, the EGR replacement to rectify the fault, if that repair does t fix it. There should be no charge to the customer. It’s as simple as that.

Too many garages have been getting away with this ‘try and test’ method for years. Customers must be losing a fortune.
