| Comment | As much as Argyle Street isn't great and we should fix the social issues around it, the constant chat about it here is pretty overblown, constantly talking about zombies and talking about it as if its the worst place in the world.
Pretty much every city in North America has a central street with vastly more people on the streets and addicts around, quite easily see people nude, defecating or taking drugs in the open. There is what like 3 actual homeless people in Glasgow vs many thousands in San Francisco.
European cities do manage a fair bit better, Berlin is pretty comparable, Paris isnt great although probably not quite as bad as Glasgow. Madrid and Barcelona are not without some sketchy areas centrally (although to be fair, Spain probably fares better here than most).
I think we should aim to be better and its definitely worth investing in social welfware that prevents these type of scenes, but its also worth being realistic about how bad it actually is. |
