That’s me done with mainstream theatre.

Was super excited to see Ocean at the End of the Lane after seeing rave reviews and recommendations from a friend. Listened to some of the music beforehand and went in expecting a great show.

Instead, what we got was a sub-am dram experience. Every single character spoke in that weird, irritating way where peopletalkreallyquicklyovereachotherwithnospacesbetweendialogue that no-ones does in real life. Since mics weren’t being used, everyone was just shouting at each other meaning that everything that was said had no emotion, inflection or time to breathe. The main protagonist spoke in such a whiny, singsong way, adding syllables to words for no reason that he was impossible to take seriously and the main villain spoke like a CBeebies presenter, coming across as more of a sassy, toothless Ursula clone as opposed to a credible, dangerous threat. Many characters also spoke in awful regional accents for no reason, making their lines even more unbelievable and them as characters unsympathetic. One scene which was meant to be an emotional scene of elevated tension was so melodramatic and hammy, I had to stifle myself from bursting out laughing.

The music is astounding and the sets were interesting, but the action sequences were just as poor as the acting. Exploration and chase sequences amounted to people jumping about, Naruto-running around the stage and waving their hands all over the place akin to something you’d see children doing in a playground while playing Harry Potter. Am dram productions I’ve seen this year have had better choreographed and more interesting sequences than the ones on display here.

While Wish You Were Dead was so bad it was good, this was as terrible as An Inspector Calls only unfortunately without the ability to leave due to a friend wanting to finish the show. I couldn’t care about any of the characters or see it through to the end. I am astounded by how this has rave 5-star reviews and insulted by the extremely poor quality of show that audiences are being delivered after paying nearly £50 for a ticket. Three recent shiters in a row means that I’ll be avoiding mainstream plays from now on. There’s much better stuff to be found more affordably in independent and am dram theatre in Glasgow.
