It's rude to randomly start talking to people in the States? Since when? As a Brit I found it shocking how many people would regale me with their medical history at the pharmacist! No lady, I do not wish to hear more about your ovaries.

Glaswegians are fairly relaxed (Scots in general actually) and it's totally fine to just start chatting to folks.

You're trick, unless you are already familiar with the accent, will be understanding what is said. The speed of delivery, accent, colloquialisms and different grammar can throw your for a loop.

If it's uni, loads of clubs and societies. If it's work, still loads of hobbies and things you can get into.

Meetup (as has been suggested) is another good way. Sometimes there's a pub quiz or something mentioned on here.
