You can excess any ticket although most staff are not helpful in this respect and will say you can’t when you can. You need to stand your ground. Excessing a train ticket is poorly understood by both staff and the travelling public.
If you purchase a ticket from A to B and then travel to C then you can ask to have the ticket excessed and you pay (A to C) - (A to B). Often the fare is very low like 40p or so and can be zero at times.
The same applies to excessing off peak to peak and singles to returns.
