Comment | The fungus knats that breed in the drain are much much smaller than fruit flies (they're the really tiny black ones). I find that a kettle of water kills them just fine, in the same way as if you poured lots of boiling water over anything it would kill it. Though I ended up putting tape over the back (overspill?) hole because they seemed to be breeding there too.
(I will back this person up though (for anyone reading) and repeat again - do NOT mix vinegar and bleach because it = lethal chlorine gas!).
For the fruit flies (much bigger (relatively) and lighter in colour, and you can see their eyes if you look closely) - to clear them 1. the cider vinegar traps like everyone has said and 2. put all your food waste in a compost bag and tie it closed - only open it to put new things in - then make sure you take it out regularly. Had an accidental infestation recently and cleared it this way. If they are still lurking - keep an eye out for the areas they are in and you will probably find why they are still around/what they are breeding on. I even had some breed on a fruit teabag!! |
