I’ve been in Shawlands since the 90s and it’s been ebbs and flows. 90s was quite vibrant and had a real mix of businesses. 00’s was a bit depressing with just a few of the quality old businesses remaining and a revolving door of bargain stores, hairdressers and takeaways.

I’d argue that Strangebrew OG shop heralded a change of attitudes towards the area and more coffee shops/niche retail shops. The shop itself might not have been the catalyst but it’s pretty emblematic of a younger demographic opting into the area.
