I cycle through the park very often and never had any issues. There aren't criminals waiting for you as you have stated.
The only risks are from people who don't hear you and dogs off the lead. It's just a matter of having good lighting and a bell. The pathway along the Kelvin is quite narrow at one point just after the Big Blue Pub.
