Don’t just get a big coat. Dress in layers so you can add or remove levels of insulation depending on your environment.

Long underwear in silk or polyester should be the base layer to wick sweat from your skin and keep you dry, followed by an insulation layer like a sweater or flannel shirt to trap heat, followed by a hard or soft shell rain jacket to keep water out.

A system of layers like this is better than just one big coat over a t-shirt, because if the weather suddenly warms up a bit and you take your big coat off, you’ll be totally unprotected against any sudden chilly breezes.
