Before tenements were reconfigured into larger living spaces from room and kitchens it was common to have communal toilets.
Originally they were outside. But during the slum clearances of the early 20th century they were installed in the landing of each tenement.
Often they were added to the building as a small multi floor extension to the landing/stairs and you can still view this outcropping on lots of current tenements from the exterior. |
