For Carlisle book ahead as it's a lot cheaper. Even a few days makes a big difference Vs on the day.

Carlisle as lots have said you can buy a ticket and use ScotRail (this service is 2+ hours), TransPennine or Avanti are about 1 hour. Price for all is similar and there are 2 trains every hour..

If you book in advance you can save tickets to the app of any of these providers or Trainline which is a ticketing app for all.

You can also collect physical tickets at the station if pre booked as you get a collection code.. you might need to use the ticket office to collect with a non UK card rather than a self service

When booking your return especially on different days it's often cheaper to book two single journeys .
If same day then return generally works out better.
