The oil in the chippy will be flavoured by its use. Too fresh and clean and it can be bland. Used too much and whatever goes into it will taste like shite. A good chippy will regulate its frying oil well. Hake? Fuck Hake. If it costs so little for three portions it's probably be shite. Even chippies don't pay that little wholesale for cod. Of course you can make it all at home, but there's no way it'll taste as good as a good fish and chip shop's. Also, are you using two chip pans/deep fat fryers? If not, how do you get the fish and the chips ready at the same time? Please don't say oven chips, for the love of God.
