Cyclists are not as negligent as you may think. The conditions on the road play a much more significant part on the thought processes and concentration.

In a car you are completely protected by a secure metal cage. You feel invincible and many react badly to more vulnerable road users who do not have that extra level of protection.

Potholes, slippery surfaces, poor lighting, wind, rain and continually looking behind you all gobble up resources.

Cyclists should be forgiven more for errors and should be treated as being unpredictable at all times.

Unfortunately when a cyclist does smash into a car as you say it’s the cyclist that suffers. Metal and plastic can be repaired. Flesh and bones less easily so.
