It’s so sad seeing so many gaming businesses that could be viable go bust because the people who run it are people who love games rather than understand how to run a retail/leisure business.

First of all it’s important to take the right advice when negotiating the lease for the property. Advice from someone who knows the market must be sought. This is the first pitfall because if you start with a sky high occupancy cost ratio you’re already banking to go bust in the future.

There must be a quality offer focused on creating turnover by enticing people with money to spend, not people who are going to take up space for hours without spending money. I think that the turnover element would be driven by food and beverage rather than gaming which ironically would be the last part of the puzzle. Another aspect would be events and promotion.

Especially you want a high turnover cafe/bar that could be located somewhere off pitch with cheap rent because of the gaming aspect it’s destination rather than footfall driven. If it’s a footfall driven business people need to come in, spend money and leave as fast as possible but you would need to have the turnover to justify the rent of the location.

Just my two pennies.
