Have to disagree slightly, just about "than in Europe." The cheapest supermarkets I saw in Germany were much worse than here. Even the mid-market ones. The check out staff here have scanning targets, but in Germany, much worse - that's why they just literally chuck things at you. The recycling machines there are a nightmare and cause all kinds of fuckery if it's not a big shop and another member of staff has to fix that. They'll take people off the aisles to the check outs but only if madness ensues, and vice versa. Lots of other examples, but I've never seen supermarket staff have to take on so much shite and meet efficiency targets like they have to. Our supermarkets treat their staff like shite as well (and the union is fucking hopeless) but I'd say it's much better here than there by and large.
