You mentioned knowing about needing a guarantor but not if you have one. If you don't, you might need to pay 6 months' rent (legally the maximum amount they can ask for) up front. I guess that would just be your whole stay. Like others said, the market is really tough right now, so staying in student accommodations is your best bet. They generally also include utilities so you won't have to weigh being warm against really high electric bills.

If you absolutely insist on private rentals, be very enthusiastic at showings and willing to transfer money on the spot. They still might not be willing since you won't be here very long and they'd just have to find a new tenant again soon
